Val James
Textiles

Val joined the NSCG in 2002. She emigrated from the UK in 1961, where she had practised and taught hairdressing and theatrical and film wig dressing in London.

Val started experimenting with patchwork and applique in 1968, and made functional patchwork kites for artist Peter Travis in the 1970s. Many of these have been hung in large hotel atriums and other public buildings.

She has won several prizes for her patchwork creations, Royal Easter Show, Family Circle and New Idea/Coats Patons Craft Awards to name a few. Val was a member  of the Gordon Craft Co-operative for 17 years and has attended various classes at Ku-Ring-Gai Art Centre including calligraphy, machine embroidery, Art to Wear and mosaic tiling.

She is always trying to further her skills with new techniques and experimentation with fabric embellishment, and has attended several Fibre Forum workshops, learning from local and international tutors.

More recently she has been creating Art to Wear from recycled  products such as newspaper, drink can ring pulls, plastic bags and used videotape, to give a few examples. She has won prizes in this field in Hornsby Council Recycling Competition, which is held annually.
