Maret Kalmar Jewellery Maret has been a silversmith in Sydney for nearly 30 years. Art and design has always been the centre of Maret’s life. Her Estonian heritage and experiences in Australia have both played an important part in her artistic development.
Maret synthesises her heritage and experiences to create silver pieces using materials of various origins, such as freeform cut boulder opal, found objects, antique pottery shards, small bone and timber carvings, collected in her travels around Australia and the world. Artists and craftsman always surrounded her, influencing her style. From an early age she was influenced by Estonian-born silversmith Niina Ots, who created works using semi-precious stones. Niina was trained in rigorous traditional European techniques and encouraged Maret to take up silver smithing and to develop her own style.
Maret participates in various local and interstate exhibitions and her work features in several private collections.
Maret’s pieces are also available through www.artsandcraftsnsw.com.au at gallery Craft NSW, 12 Argyle Pl, Millers Point NSW 2000. Maret also does commissions on request. Maret’s work can be viewed on her website - maretkalmar.com
